What Meta looks for
Utility
About something the customer already did — their order, booking, payment or account — with nothing promotional. Meta’s own example:
Reminder: Your monthly payment for {{service}} will be billed on {{date}} to the {{card}} you have saved on file.
Marketing
Offers, launches, upsells, win-backs — and any update that also carries a promotion. Meta’s own example:
Your subscription will expire on {{date}}! Renew today to save {{discount}}.
Authentication
Only a one-time code for logging in or verifying. Meta supplies the words; you choose options such as an expiry time.
{{1}} is your verification code.

Common reasons templates are rejected
Most rejections are formatting, not content — and every one of these is caught by the checker above.
Browse ready-made templates- Variables written wrongly — anything other than {{1}}, {{2}}, with no spaces or symbols inside
- Variables out of order, with a gap, or touching each other
- A body that starts or ends with a variable
- Too many variables for the words around them, so the purpose is unclear
- Asking customers for card numbers, PINs, passwords, OTPs or ID numbers
- Anything WhatsApp’s Commerce Policy prohibits, such as gambling, alcohol or tobacco
- A “utility” template that also promotes — Meta re-files it as marketing
How does Meta decide if a template is marketing or utility?
Utility templates must be non-promotional and specific to the customer — about their order, booking, payment or account — or essential to them. Anything that promotes, upsells or includes an offer is marketing, and so is a template that mixes an update with a promotion, or one whose purpose is unclear.
Can Meta change my template’s category after approval?
Yes. Meta reviews approved templates and can move a utility template that reads as marketing into the marketing category, usually with a day’s notice. It is then billed at the marketing rate.
Why was my WhatsApp template rejected?
The most common reasons are formatting ones: variables not written as {{1}}, {{2}} in order, variables next to each other or at the very start or end, and templates whose purpose is unclear. Content that breaks WhatsApp’s policies is rejected too.
Is this checker the same as Meta’s review?
No. It applies Meta’s published rules and the common rejection reasons, but Meta’s own review makes the final decision. Use it to catch problems before you submit.
Does it work for Hindi templates?
Yes. It reads English, Hindi and Hinglish, and the formatting rules are the same in every language.
