When to send it
- A customer logs in to your website or app
- Verifying a phone number during sign-up
- Confirming a sensitive change, such as a new device or password reset
Tips for approval and replies
- Authentication templates can carry only the code — no links, media, offers or extra sentences. Anything else belongs in a separate utility or marketing template.
- Meta requires a copy-code or one-tap autofill button on authentication templates, so the customer never has to retype the code.
- Add the “do not share this code” note and an expiry time — both are options you tick, not text you write.
- Send the code from your own server the moment it is requested. OTPs need an automated sender connected to your login system; a team inbox or broadcast is the wrong tool for them.

Can I write my own text for a WhatsApp OTP message?
No. Authentication templates use Meta’s preset wording. You choose whether to add a security note and an expiry time, and which button to show; Meta writes the message in the language you pick.
Can an OTP message include a link or an offer?
No. An authentication template may only deliver the code. A template that adds promotion is not an authentication template — send any other message separately.
Is an OTP message cheaper than marketing?
