WhatsApp Business API vs Telegram for Business: An Honest Comparison
Telegram's tools for businesses are free and powerful, but they work very differently from WhatsApp's. Here is what each really offers — and the one rule that decides most cases.

Businesses comparing messaging platforms often ask about a “Telegram Business API” as an alternative to the WhatsApp Business API. The first thing to know is that Telegram does not sell one product by that name. What it offers businesses is a set of separate tools — a free Bot API, Telegram Business features for Premium accounts, channels for broadcasting, and Telegram Gateway for verification codes. This guide sets those side by side with WhatsApp's Business Platform, so you can compare like with like.
What Telegram actually offers businesses
The Bot API
Telegram's Bot API is an HTTP interface for building bots. Telegram's own FAQ says bots can message their users at no cost by default. A bot can answer questions, take orders, send files, run payments and talk in groups. Two limits matter for a business:
- A bot cannot start the conversation. Telegram's documentation is explicit: a user must message the bot or add it to a group first.
- Broadcast speed is capped at about 30 messages per second. Paid broadcasts raise that to 1,000 per second at 0.1 Telegram Stars per extra message, but only for bots with a 100,000-Star balance and 100,000 monthly active users.
Telegram Business
Launched in March 2024, Telegram Business turns a personal Telegram account into a business profile. It includes opening hours, location, quick replies, greeting and away messages, a custom start page, chat tags, links to chat, and the option to connect a bot that replies on the account's behalf. It is included with a Telegram Premium subscription rather than sold separately.
Channels and Telegram Gateway
Channels are one-to-many feeds that people choose to join — well suited to news, deals and community updates, but there is no private one-to-one conversation in a channel. Telegram Gateway is a separate paid service for sending verification codes to phone numbers through Telegram, priced by Telegram at $0.01 per code with refunds for codes that are not delivered.
What the WhatsApp Business Platform offers
- Business-initiated messages to customers who have opted in, through Meta-approved templates — even if they have never messaged you before.
- Free-form conversation inside the 24-hour window after a customer writes to you.
- Rich messages — images, documents, buttons, lists, product catalogues.
- A verified business identity — your display name and profile, and a blue tick for approved Official Business Accounts.
- Access through a provider — you use it through a panel like wbm.link or a developer platform, not an app you download.
WhatsApp Business API vs Telegram Business API: side by side
| WhatsApp Business Platform | Telegram (Bot API, Business, channels) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who can message first | The business, using approved templates to opted-in customers | The customer must start a chat with a bot; channels need people to join |
| Identity | Your phone number, business profile, blue tick if approved | Bot username or business account; a bot does not see the customer's phone number unless they share it |
| Cost to send | Meta charges per delivered template (India: ₹0.8631 marketing, ₹0.115 utility/authentication) plus provider fee | Bot messages free by default; Premium for Telegram Business; paid broadcasts above 30 msg/s |
| Content approval | Templates reviewed by Meta before use | No pre-approval of bot messages |
| Broadcast | Templates to opted-in lists, within Meta's daily messaging limits | Channels, or bot messages to users who started the bot |
| Team inbox | Through providers' panels with many agents | Not built in for bots; you build or buy a tool |
| Verification codes | Authentication templates | Telegram Gateway, $0.01 per code |
The rule that decides most cases: who starts the chat
On Telegram, the customer has to come to you first. That is ideal for a community or a support bot people seek out, and it keeps spam low. But it means you cannot send an order update, a payment reminder or an appointment confirmation to a customer who has only given you their phone number.
On WhatsApp, a business can send that first message — as long as the customer has opted in and the message is an approved template. For shops, clinics, coaching institutes, real-estate firms and D2C brands, whose customers hand over a phone number at checkout or on a form, that difference usually settles the question.
Cost: free is not always cheaper
Telegram's bot messages being free is a real advantage for high-volume, customer-initiated use such as alerts people have subscribed to. On WhatsApp, Meta charges per delivered template message and, from 1 October 2026, has told partners it will also charge for service replies inside the 24-hour window — see what changes in October 2026.
But the bill is only part of it. If most of your customers are reachable on WhatsApp and only some have ever opened your Telegram bot, the free channel reaches fewer of them. What you should compare is cost per customer reached and per result, not cost per message. Our WhatsApp API pricing guide shows a full monthly bill.
Automation and teams
Telegram's Bot API is flexible and developer-friendly: if you have engineers, you can build almost anything. What you do not get out of the box is a place where five support agents share one inbox, assign chats and see each other's notes — you would build or buy that.
On WhatsApp, that layer is what providers sell. On wbm.link, for example, your whole team works from one shared inbox, with keyword auto-replies, a flow chatbot and an AI assistant that answers in English, Hindi or Hinglish — without writing code.
